Sixteen German students and two teachers were on board the Germanwings flight that crashed en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf on Tuesday, said a German official.

"This is the darkest day in the history of our city," said Bodo Klimpel, who is the mayor of Haltern, Germany, where the students went to school

The teachers and group of tenth graders from Joseph-König-Gymnasium in Haltern were returning from an exchange program in Llinars del Vallès, Spain, near Barcelona.
