Satellite images show historic Syrian sites reduced to rubble

A long and bloody civil war has taken an immeasurable toll on the people of Syria, but a new report provides a detailed analysis of the toll on the country's cultural heritage sites that have also fallen victim to the unrest.


Several locations with invaluable importance, including UNESCO World Heritage sites, have been seriously damaged and in some cases destroyed. While this has been widely noted since the civil war began in 2011, a United Nations report released Tuesday provides the most comprehensive look yet at the damage to these irreplaceable sites.
