Uber Continues Expansion, Launches in Alaska and More of France

Ride-sharing service Uber added Anchorage, Alaska, and a handful of French cities to its service Friday

Local taxi companies in Anchorage are attempting to figure out how to keep up with the new threat, whose app links passengers with drivers using their own cars. The base Uber fare in Anchorage is $2.50, plus $.25 per minute, $2.10 per mile and a $1 "Safe Rides Fee."

Local cab company Yellow Dispatch is among those closely watching Uber's launch, according to local television station KTVA. CEO Sloane Unwin said he welcomes the competition, but has problems with the fact that Uber drivers don't have to pass the same regulation and licensing standards other drivers have to go through in Alaska.
