MARIUPOL, Ukraine — As NATO leaders prepared to meet at a summit this week in Wales to discuss, among other things, the conflict in Ukraine, pro-Russian rebels appeared to be pushing further towards the strategically important port city of Mariupol.
Last week, pro-Russian forces captured the town of Novoazovsk on the eastern coastline near Russia, edging towards Mariupol. Ukraine accused Moscow of sending in its troops and supporting rebels in the take-over.
The port city is considered important because it could allow Moscow a corridor between Russia and Crimea, the southeastern peninsula it annexed in March.
