KIEV, Ukraine — It is now clear that Ukraine is experiencing an invasion in all but name
Masked, armed soldiers carrying automatic weapons in full military dress have taken control of several key cities and towns across the east of the country, demanding a referendum on joining the Russian Federation and vowing to fight the central government in Kiev. In several areas across the region Ukrainian troops defected to the Pro-Russian separatists, became trapped in strategic areas, or worse, forced to surrender and were taken prisoner. The Ukrainian government could offer little by way of explanation except to accuse "Russian agents" of having captured the troops, with Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov saying "separatist groups coordinated by Russian special services" are behind the revolts that have gripped the region.
