Top Asia Destinations for Solo Travelers

If you’ve never traveled alone before, then the thought of venturing out into the unknown without anyone to accompany you can seem pretty daunting. Luckily, there are plenty of excellent places in Asia that are the ideal spot for your solo adventure.

There are numerous reasons why Asia can be a great destination if you’re visiting on your own, including the friendly locals, the cost of traveling, the ease of getting around and the opportunity to meet other lone travelers.

Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the cheapest options in Southeast Asia, so the affordability factor is a definite plus for the lone adventurer. Of course, the delicious street food also helps. Traveling around is cheap and easy, and there are plenty of backpacker hostels dotted around the country.

Vietnam,Hoi An

If you’re looking for a leisure opportunity, then consider visiting Hoi An on the coast. If you’re more in the mood for a party, then you should visit Nha Trang. Vietnam is a great place for shopping as you can easily find inexpensive but beautiful shoes, bags, and dresses. Beware, however, as scams are rife so you will need to read up before heading over to know how to spot and avoid them.

Singapore

Singapore is one of the safest travel destinations in the world, so if you’re concerned about going it alone, then this should set your mind at ease. The clean, tropical paradise has plenty to offer and is the ideal hub from which to begin a bigger trip around Southeast Asia. Enjoy the traditional character of the place by exploring Chinatown and Little India.

The Singapore Merlion

The tourism landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, so while there are fantastic opportunities to explore historic sites and heritage buildings dating as far back as the early 1800s, you don’t lose out on the modern, international mindset. The place has a cosmopolitan vibe with plenty of nightlife options, shopping spots, and mouth-watering cuisine. And if you think that is all, you are wrong. You can be sure that Singapore will blow your mind with some really unusual things. You want example? Here it is. If you, for example, want to join the safari expedition in the middle of the night, you can. This city has one of the most unusual attractions in the region called Night Safari.

Thailand

For backpackers, Thailand is one of the most-visited countries in Asia. You won’t find it difficult to meet other solo travelers, especially in hostels. Since many people speak English, particularly those in the tourism industry, you won’t find it difficult to make your way around. The tropical climate, beautiful white sand beaches, and majestic mountains make it well worth a visit.

Wat Mahathat - Sukhothai

You want to start off in Bangkok, one of Southeast Asia’s most thriving cities, with excellent nightlife on offer. There are beautiful temples to view and enough delicious meals to satisfy all of your gastronomic cravings, particularly on the streets of Khao San Road. Try practicing your bargaining skills at the floating markets of Bangkok, relax on the beaches in Phuket or soak in the local culture and history at Chiang Rai.

Nepal

Nepalese citizens are known for their kindness and strong religious beliefs. Tourists don’t tend to be treated any differently or mistreated for that matter, and you will find they are mostly happy to help. This friendly nature makes it ideal for solo travelers, especially as it’s one of the cheapest countries you can visit.

For mountain lovers, it’s simply paradise. The incredible trails attract over 200,000 trekkers a year, with lots of options to choose from for hikers of varying ability. Some of the most popular trails include Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Poonhill Trek and Langtang Trek. If you want to gain a better insight of the Nepalese culture, then explore Kathmandu. The lively markets and stunning temples will make the trip to the bustling city well worth it.

Philippines

It’s easy to see why the Philippines would be an attractive destination for lone travelers. After all, it’s one of the happiest places in the world, where the optimistic and incredibly hospitable locals will instantly make you feel welcome. It’s a country filled with astonishing beauty, and it’s perfect for the budget traveler, yet not as touristy as, say, Thailand.

Mt. Mayon's Postcard Shot

The fact that it’s less visited means you don’t have as clear a backpacker circuit as in some Asian destinations, but don’t let that put you off. Popular spots that will make traveling a bit easier include Bohol and Palawan. Adventurous folk should go for a dive in the Tubbataha Reef, surf in Siargao or explore the cave systems on Cebu Island.
