Society tends to base its definition of what’s culturally important on very arbitrary requirements. But by combining blues with poetry and sermons with sonnets, Langston Hughes was able to express a free, rebellious, culturally important American soul. No requirements required.
I found this awesome lesson in poetry and American-ness and Langston Hughes on John Green’s Tumblr. He was so articulate and thoughtful in this video that I may have spent a few more hours watching more stuff he does? It’s fine. I’ll be fine.
This lesson is part of a larger series of literature explorations called Crash Course. So much goodness in them there hills.
